Miscellaneous Information
Mardyth was born in Miller, Buffalo Coy Nebraska, USA, on 18 July 1916. His father was a farmer and was born in Carthage, Illinois, USA and his mother, deceased, was born in Fillmore County, Nebraska. He had brothers William Wendell, Wyrich John, Lynn DeVare and Shirley Zarth. The schools he attended were Miller Public School, Nebraska. 1921-1929 and Miller High 1929-1933 (General). He also went to Findlay College, Ohio 1933-1936 (B.A. degree in history). His sport interests were basketball, baseball and football. Mardyth was farming for his father in Miller between 1936-1940, spent several months between 1940-1941 flying with the USA Naval Air Army, Pensacola, Florida before being discharged, and then another two months in 1941 as an Airport attendant with Eddie Fisher Flying Services in Kansas City. |
He enlisted on 19 November 1941 (a matter of days before the attackon Pearl Harbour, while the USA was neutral) and after training embarked for the U.K. on 29 April 1944 arriving at 3 PRC on 8 May 1944. He then went on to 11 (P) AFU on 13 June 1944, 22 OTU 22 August 1944, 61 Base 25 October 1944, 1659 CU 8 December 1944 and 429 Squadron on 7 Feb 1945. Mardyth was to lose his life from here a month later on 6 March 1945. |

Operation | Chemnitz- continuation of Operation Thunderclap. 760 aircraft. Severe icing conditions over home bases cost 9 aircraft, especially from 426 Sqn. A further 22 aircraft were lost on the operation. The centre and south of the city were badly damaged by fire. Several important factories were destroyed, including the Siegmar tank engine plant. |
